“WORD” © is a purpose-made training program, developed to supplement and align with the aim for English in the National Curriculum, which is ‘to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word’.
"WORD" is a mnemonic acronym that signifies the primary principles of the program, which are:
- Writing: act of producing words that can be read and understood.
- Oration: a formal speech or public declaration.
- Reading: the act or activity of one that reads.
- Diction: degree of clarity and distinction of punctuation in speech.
Purpose is to engage, educate, enlighten and empower the minds of Primary and Secondary children in Key stages 1-4 (aged 5-16).
Specialist Tutor delivers stand-alone and successive workshops (max.12 children). Concludes with presentation event to showcase children's talent and award accreditation and mementos in recognition of successful completion of the program.
Children explore and experience poetry, fables and storytelling; and learn how best to use a dictionary and thesaurus. As a result, children that successfully complete the training program increase mastery of English Language, Literacy and Grammar; and develop effective communication skills and techniques.
One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life; that word is love
The Word Poem
The word is the greatest weapon ever!
Simply because it is derived and stemmed from the greatest force of all.
Which is of course, thought itself indeed.
First the thought, then the word, then the deed.
Then accordingly, you and I shall of course be able to plant our seed.
Righteous or unrighteous.
Whatsoever you sow, so of course you and I shall naturally reap.
And people, men and women
Through their works, you and I shall surely know them.
In 2007, Cyrus Desir and Dean Verdant co-created “WORD” © Training Program for children to master English Grammar, Language and Literacy, and develop effective communication skills and techniques.
Today, Young People are being overlooked for jobs because of an inability to speak English properly. Education and business leaders have blamed Street Slang, made popular by Rap music artists and the wider TV culture, as a cause of Youth unemployment.
“WORD” © is fundamental, yet also a highly ingenious Lifelong Learning initiative, created to motivate the minds of children, and tackle the high number of Young People labelled as, or at risked of being labelled NEET.
Be thou incapable of change in that which is right, and men will rely upon thee. Establish unto thyself principles of action; and see that thou ever act according to them. First know that thy principles are just, and then be thou

In 2012, program delivered to group of KS1/2 children (aged 4-10), from The Factory Community Project and Children’s Centre’s Out of School Project, Newington Green Primary School (border of Hackney and Islington).
Program evaluations showed that children responded positively and ably, and enjoyed the experience of new and creative ways to learn. Children managed to fully interpret morals; use dictionary and thesaurus to find meaning of words; and enhance capability across all four program principles (i.e. Writing, Oration, Reading and Diction).

Today society is affected by increasing numbers of young people aged 16 to 24 who are not in education, training or employment.
- 25% leave Primary school unable to read or write properly.
- 20% leave Secondary school unable to read or write confidently.
Too many Young People are failing to gain education, training and employment, which can invariably lead to a life of under achievement; and being overlooked for jobs. In some cases, the cause is an inability to speak English properly, due to an increasing tendency to use Street Slang as common speech. More prevalent amongst those from Black and minority ethnic communities and groups.
There are many reasons why children fail to succeed in school. Which can be due to poor teaching; lacking concentration; weak interpersonal skills; underdeveloped fine motor control; memory issues; fear; and or procrastination.
The solution is “WORD” © Training Program, custom-made to engage, educate, enlighten and empower children, especially those from Black and minority ethnic cultures and communities, who otherwise may miss the opportunity to gain a worthwhile education whilst at school. Children explore, enjoy and experience poetry, creative writing, fables, short stories, and how to effectively use a dictionary and thesaurus. As a result, children gain mastery of Writing, Oration, Reading and Diction.
